Garrett Brickner Named Assistant Track & Field and Cross Country Coach
Former VMI standout athlete Garrett Brickner has been named assistant Track & Field and Cross Country Coach at Washington and Lee University. Garrett Brickner graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 2006 with a degree in Psychology.
“We are excited about having a coach of Brickner’s proven ability working with our program,” stated W&L Head Coach Nate Hoey. “Coach Brickner was an outstanding student-athlete during his time at VMI and has shown a tremendous aptitude for teaching and coaching. We are thrilled with his addition and what he will bring to the team.”
Brickner was an NCAA Division 1 National qualifier in the High Jump and 2-time IC4A Champion in the High Jump and an 8-time IC4A qualifier. He was also an 8-time Southern/Big South Conference Champion and a 2-time Conference Championship meet record holder in both the High Jump and Decathlon. Brickner still holds the All-Time Big South Conference Record in the High Jump. He boast personal best performances of: High Jump (7’1.75”), Long Jump (23’6.25”) and Decathlon (6,510 points).
“Garrett came to VMI as a very good athlete with a lot of potential said VMI Head Coach Mike Bozeman. “Through hard work and a willingness to learn all he could about his events he became one of the finest athletes in VMI track history and the Big South Conference. His knowledge of events (from his decathlon experience), his eagerness to learn and his ability to effectively communicate will make him an outstanding track and field coach. Washington and Lee is fortunate to have him and I wish him and their program all the best.”
“I'm very pleased with the opportunity to work with the W&L track and field student-athletes and coaches,” said Brickner. “It's exciting to join a growing team with such motivation and drive. I look forward to helping them continue in their success and development.”
Brickner will begin his duties at Washington and Lee University on August 1.
